Australian Ian Thorpe to retire from swimming after Beijing
Australian five-time Olympic champion Ian Thorpe says he is going to retire from swimming after the 2008 Beijing Games.
The 200 and 400m Olympic freestyle champion and world record holder
will be swimming in Australia's Commonwealth Games trials next week.
Ian Thorpe, 23, said a new seven-year deal with adidas was unlikely to
mean he would extend his career to the 2012 London Olympics.
"It's not out of the question but at the moment I intend to retire in Beijing," he told The Australian.
"It (the adidas deal) is there if I want to go on, but if I don't want to, I can become an ambassador for adidas."
And Ian Thorpe hopes to contest the 100m and 200m freestyle in Melbourne in March.
Ian Thorpe decided to take a long break from swimming as a sport after
the 2004 Athens Games and he missed last July's World Championships in
Montreal.
Ian Thorpe tried for a comeback last November but only lasted one race
before pulling out of the 100m freestyle final at the Fina World Cup.
