Boxer Jon Thaxton knocks out Juan Carlos Diaz Melero
British boxer Jon Thaxton has beaten Spaniard Juan Carlos Diaz Melero when he knocked him out in the third round, and in so doing, became the new European lightweight champion.
Thaxton defeated his opponent from Spain in front of his home crowd in Norwich.

Jo Pavey comes third in Great North Run
The UK sprinter Jo Pavey came third in the Great North Run half-marathon after Ethiopia's Gete Wami won the race.
Pavey, who is aiming to qualify for the London marathon in 2012, battled hard in the closing stretch with Wami and the Kenyan runner Magdelane Mukunzi, who had held the lead.

Snooker star Ronnie O'Sullivan beaten by Ricky Walden
World champion snooker star Ronnie O'Sullivan has just been beaten 10-8 in the Shanghai Masters in China by Ricky Walden.
O'Sullivan started well and was leading 8-6 and looked all set to claim his 22nd ranking title.

Serb tennis star Jelena Jankovic beats Nadia Petrova
Serb tennis star Jelena Jankovic defeated Nadia Petrova with a 6-4 6-3 score to become the winner of the Porsche Grand Prix in Stuttgart.
23-year-old Jankovic, who is now the new world number one, had already won last week's China Open and she beat her Russian opponent in 83 minutes, claiming her eighth career title in the process.

Tennis star Venus Williams beats Dinara Safina
US tennis star Venus Williams has defeated her third-seeded opponent Dinara Safina with a 6-4 6-2 score to proceed to the semi-finals of the Porsche Grand Prix, which is being held in Stuttgart, Germany.
Williams started well in the game and kept in command most of the way. She broke leading by 5-4 and served out the first set, and then after taking another lead of 4-0 in the second set the game was hers.

Serena Williams loses world number one spot in tennis
Whilst her sister Venus has been celebrating her victory against Dinara Safina, Serena Williams's career has faced problems. An injured ankle forced her to withdraw from the Kremlin Cup and she is about to lose her world number one ranking.
The new number one spot will be going to Jelena Jankovic when the new rankings are released on Monday by the WTA.

Welshman Ian Woosnam wants to be Ryder Cup captain
Welsh golf star Ian Woosnam is hoping to become the captain for the European Ryder Cup team when the event is held at the Celtic Manor in Wales in 2010.
The Ryder Cup for 2010 is going to be the first time that the tournament has been staged in Wales and Woosnam would be the obvious choice of captain.

Casey Stoner to have wrist surgery
Australian motorcyclist Casey Stoner is going to have an operation on his left wrist because the problem is a serious threat to his sporting career.
22-year-old Stoner had broken the scaphoid bone back in 2003, but he has had problems since then because the injury has never completely healed up.

UK marathon runner Paula Radcliffe to run in New York
British athlete and marathon runner Paula Radcliffe is going to take part in the New York Marathon to defend the title she had claimed last year.
34-year-old Radcliffe won the race in 2004 as well and she is hoping to put the poor result when she only came 23rd in the marathon at the Olympic Games in the past.
