South Korean Kim Hyung-chil killed in Asian Games equestrian event
Kim Hyung-chil, a South Korean athlete, has died after his horse crushed him in a heavy fall during an equestrian event at the Asian Games in Qatar.
Kim Hyung-chil, 47, received injuries that were to prove fatal when his horse rolled over him after a fall at fence number eight in the individual cross country event and although he was rushed to hospital all efforts to revive him failed.
Kim Hyung-chil, the 11th contestant to tackle the course, had won a silver medal at the last Asian Games in Pusan on the same horse.
Asian Games organisers suspended the 32-rider event, which was being staged on a 2,470m course containing 23 fences, and it remains uncertain if it will go ahead.
South Korea chef-de-mission Chung Hyun-sook said that a decision on whether the Korean team would take part in the equestrian event would be made after a meeting of athletes and officials.
