Snooker star Ken Doherty beaten by Liang Wenbo
Snooker star Ken Doherty is the third past Crucible winner to have to leave the World Championship at the first hurdle when he was defeated 10-5 by Chinese player Liang Wenbo.
21-year-old Liang went into a 7-2 lead early on in the game and Ken Doherty was unable to battle his way back into a winning position even though he managed to claim two of the next three.
Then in the final frame both snooker players missed chances, however, it was Liang who finally won.
Ken Doherty, 38, follows in the footsteps of former world champions Steve Davis and Graeme Dott by losing in the opening round of the Crucible tournament, and unfortunately this means he will fall out of the top 16 in the world rankings for the first time in 15 years.
At only 53rd place in the provisional world rankings, Liang Wenbo said his win was the highlight of his experience as a snooker player so far and he said proudly: "It's the best win of my career."
But Ken Doherty said: "It's hard to describe, it's very disappointing."
