Chinese women break world records at National Games
In Suzhou, East China, world records were broken on October 11th the
second day of the women's weightlifting competition at the 10th
National Games.
Olympic champion Chen Yanqing from Jiangsu Province steered into the
women's weightlifting 58kg class competition claiming the gold medal
and broke the world records time and time again on Tuesday afternoon.
After she had snatched 112.5kg, upsetting the world mark of the kind,
the 26-year-old then jerked 142.5kg beating the world record of 133kg
set by compatriot Sun Caiyan. Her 255kg total also shattered the world
record of 240kg, set by China's Wang Li in 2003.
The event was held at the Stadium of Suzhou University, at which Chen
had studied on the business administration program. Coming from a small
town near Suzhou, Chen dedicated the gold medal to the university and
all of the people in Suzhou.
"I would like to thank my teachers and friends in Suzhou University.
They came here and supported me during the competition, " Chen told
reporters.
"I competed here only for the gold medal. I had not expected I could lift such a weight."
"Because I am the Olympic champion, people certainly thought I would
win the gold for Jiangsu at the National Games. Actually, I felt too
much pressure before the competition."
Gu Wei of the Chinese Army came second with a total of 247. 5kg and
beat Qiu Hongmei of Jiangxi, who lifted the same weight, because of the
body weight advantage.
Ouyang Xiaofang from Liaoning Province lifted 260kg Tuesday evening in
the women's 63kg category to give her province their first gold medal
in a weightlifting tournament at the National Games.
All her snatch, jerk and total results came higher than the world record by 5kg, 2kg and 12.5kg respectively.
Ouyang Xiaofang snatched 120kg in her second lift, upsetting the world
record held by Athens Olympic champion Anna Batsiushka of Belarus by
5kg.
The 22-year-old girl shattered the world mark by lifting 140kg in the
jerk thus totalled at 260kg, and smashed the 138kg word record of the
jerk by Natalia Skakun of Ukraine, and the total by Chinese Liu Xia of
247.5kg.
Yan Xiaoli of Shandong came in second at 255kg and Wang Zhu from the host Jiangsu had the bronze at 252.5kg.
"I displayed my best performance in training. It is amazing," Ouyang said after the competition.
"The competition at the National Games was quite fierce, but Xiaofang
withstood the pressure. She has the ability to take part in the Beijing
Olympics in 2008," Ouyang's coach Li Xiuying told reporters at the
event.
