Chellsie Memmel in the lead at World Gymnastics Championships
Chellsie Memmel got over her injury concerns to help give America the lead after day one of the women's qualifying at the World Gymnastics Championships.
Chellsie Memmel, 18, the all-round title holder, injured her ankle last week but still managed to score 61.350 to lead the individual qualifying in Denmark.
15-year-old Italian Vanessa Ferrari took second place on 61.100 with Jana Bieger of the US third with 60.625.
In the team event, America lead Olympic champions Romania by 10.725 points.
Chellsie Memmel, who missed the Athens Olympic because of her injury, is the only member of the 2003 world title-winning US women's team taking part in Aarhus.
"I had a problem with my foot and couldn't believe that it had happened again," said Chellsie Memmel about her latest injury worry.
"But stuff happens and I took it easy for a few days. I taped it up and I feel really good now.
"My main focus on Monday was the team but after Wednesday I can think about myself," Chellsie Memmel added.
