British fencer Jon Willis wins gold at Heidenheimer Pokal in Germany
British fencer Jon Willis has become the first fencer from the UK to win a gold medal since 1981 when he claimed victory at the Heidenheimer Pokal, Germany.
Jon Willis, 26, from Stockport and part of British Fencing's new Olympic Pathway Programme, made a very impressive nine consecutive wins after losing three out of four fights in the preliminary stages of the contest.
Jon Willis explained that he thought he had done so well because of the amount of training he had done and he said: "Being able to train full time is clearly already paying off for me, and I'm so thrilled with the medal.
"Hopefully, it will be the first of many for me and the rest of the Great Britain Olympic team."
Jon Willis went from 6-11 down to beat former champion Ulrich Robeiri 15-11 and win gold, and British Fencing performance director Graham Watts said proudly: "What Jon has achieved in winning such a stellar tournament cannot be underestimated.
"This is the first time a British fencer has won a World Cup event since 1981, the year Jon was actually born."
