Solerina wins at Fairyhouse for third time
Solerina held on in a tight-photo finish to win the Ballymore
Properties Hatton's Grace Hurdle for the third successive year at
Fairyhouse on Sunday.
Johnny Murtagh on Golden Cross had looked like denying the
eight-year-old mare in the Grade One contest but Solerina, ridden by
Gary Hutchinson, got back to win by a short head for her 20th career
success.
Brave Inca, backed down to start slight 11-8 favourite, was third under champion jockey Tony McCoy.
Solerina, sent off the 6-4 second favourite, relished the cut in the
ground from start to finish and looked set fair for a decisive victory
once Brave Inca began to feel the pinch.
However, Golden Cross, quickened nicely into contention turning for home.
Johnny Murtagh looked to have timed his run to perfection as Mick
Halford's six-year-old came level pegging with Solerina, who ploughed
through the final hurdle.
However, although the race's momentum was temporarily with Golden
Cross, Solerina responded in equal measure to get the vote in the
photo-finish.
