Jockey Robert Winston returns to riding
Robert Winston has returned to riding after a long spell away due to injury and a battle against drink.
26-year-old Robert Winston looked set to play a major part in the Flat
jockeys' championship race before breaking his jaw in a fall at Ayr on
6 August.
During his enforced leave of absence, Robert Winston also had treatment
at an addiction clinic in Ireland after admitting to an alcohol
problem.
Robert Winston drew a blank on his return to the saddle at Lingfield on Monday.
"It is great to be back," said Robert Winston. "I was drinking myself to death. I just couldn't control it.
"There have been some dark days, but I am surprised at myself. I
thought it might take me a little while to get back into the swing of
things fitness-wise, but it hasn't been too bad."
Robert Winston was one of six jockeys arrested as part of the ongoing
City of London police investigation into allegations of race-fixing.
All the jockeys have denied any wrongdoing, and have been bailed until
early 2006.
