England's Carte Diamond throws jockey
English hope Carte Diamond was ruled out of the Melbourne Cup on
Tuesday after he threw his jockey and crashed through a fence while in
training.
The five-year-old horse sustained severe lacerations to his hindquarters at Melbourne's Flemington racecourse.
"It's one of those things, it just happened, it's a terrible tragedy," said jockey Weichong Marwing.
Trainer Brian Ellison said he believed Carte Diamond would have finished in the first three of the 1 November race.
"I really fancied him," Brian Ellison said. "I just can't believe it. The horse was well, he was moving well."
It is hoped that the colt, who had finished ninth in the Caulfield Cup
during his stay in Australia, will make a full recovery soon.
"We will just have to keep our fingers crossed that the horse is okay," said Brian Ellison.
Only last week, the Godolphin stable withdrew all three of its potential runners from Australia's most prestigious race.
Fight Your Corner suffered an injured tendon, Razkalla was a
well-beaten 16th in the Caulfield Cup and conditions are expected to be
against Fantastic Love.
"The whole trip was based on Fight Your Corner, and when he suffered
his injury, our plans were scuppered," Godolphin manager Simon Crisford
said.
The three horses will all be shipped home before the race.
"Razkalla was disappointing at Caulfield, with his wide draw meaning he
just couldn't get involved without using up an excess amount of
energy," Simon Crisford added.
"And Fantastic Love needs soft ground, which it is unlikely he will get
in Melbourne this spring. They had supporting roles, but now it is best
they all come back home."
