Australian racehorses test positive for horse flu
Eight Australian racehorses have been diagnosed with horse flu, and Sydney's spring carnival racing has had to be cancelled.
The infected animals were all at the Randwick racecourse in Sydney, which is the headquarters of racing in New South Wales, and it will now be quarantined for 30 days in a bid to stop the disease spreading.
The horse flu, which is also known as equine influenza, was first detected in recreational horses in Sydney last week, and this news meant that all horse movements from one location to another and scheduled events had to be cancelled.
Racing industries minister for New South Wales, Ian Macdonald, explained that the virus could spread rapidly through the Randwick stables, where some 700 thoroughbreds are kept.
It is further reported that about 100 people, 30 of them children, were also quarantined after an outbreak in Warwick, Queensland state, because whilst the horse flu is not harmful to humans they can be carriers of the virus on their clothing and feet.
