US golf star Phil Mickelson leads at the Riviera club

phil mickelsonAmerican golf star Phil Mickelson battled his way back into the lead of the Northern Trust Open when he claimed a 62 in the third round of the contest at the Riviera club in Los Angeles.

38-year-old Mickelson progressed to 16 under to be ahead of Argentinean golfing rival Andres Romero by four shots.

Mickelson had been three off the pace overnight after a poor 72 that followed his first-round 63, however, he birdied four of the last five holes to manage to get back on top of his game.

Mickelson and 49-year-old Fred Couples found themselves battling for the lead at one stage in the proceedings before Couples bogeyed the 15th when his drive hit a sprinkler head.

Mickelson was back on top of the game due to this and made four birdies from the 14th, just losing out on a fifth when his 10-foot putt slid past on 18.

Mickelson, who is aiming for a 35th PGA Tour title, is feeling even more confident of his chances after his recent success.
