Teenage golf star Michelle Wie disqualified
Teenage golfer Michelle Wie was disqualified when she came second after three rounds of the State Farm Classic on Saturday.
18-year-old Wie had been playing her best golf of the year, and had completed a third-round 67 moving her to 17 under par. However, unfortunately she hadn't signed her scorecard straight away on the Friday, and LPGA officials found out about this the following day.
Michelle Wie was moved to tears and she explained that she must have simply forgotten.
Sue Witters, who is director of tournament competitions for the LPGA, disqualified Wie in an office in a trailer at the Panther Creek Country Club course after asking her what had gone wrong.
Wie explained that after Friday's round she had gone out of the tent where golfers sign their scorecards but was then pursued by some volunteers who told her she had not signed.
Unfortunately it was too late by then because Wie had already walked outside the roped-off area around the tent, which under the rules meant that the mistake could not be reversed.
