Scottish golf star Sandy Lyle quits at Open
Scottish former champion golfer Sandy Lyle decided to abandon this year's Open after just 10 holes due to the very bad weather at Royal Birkdale.
50-year-old Lyle was 11 over par when he quit his game, which had been badly hindered by heavy rainfall and wind.
Lyle was playing his 33rd Open and he managed a par on the 10th before deciding it would be better to give up.
Sandy Lyle had actually quit on the same course at the 1991 Open, which happened after he hit his ball out of bounds on the 18th hole of his second round.
Lyle's recent behaviour proved controversial for day one of the Open and it has been said that it may well ruin his chance of becoming Ryder Cup captain in the future, although American Jay Townsend came to his defence and said that with all his past career achievements Lyle had earned the right to walk off the course.
