Ross Fisher wins KLM Dutch Open despite thorny problem
English golfer Ross Fisher had a nervous wait before he was announced winner of the KLM Dutch Open and his victory depended on whether he had illegally moved a bramble.
Ross Fisher, 26, had finished one shot clear of Dutch player Joost Luiten but was compelled to wait while officials came to their decision on a ruling at the 12th hole.
It had been alleged that Ross Fisher had illegally moved a bramble from near his ball before playing his second shot to the par five, but Ross Fisher said he at first thought the bramble was loose and something which he could move, and then discovered it was still firmly anchored in the ground.
Tour officials Miguel Vidaor and Jose Maria Zamora went along with Ross Fisher to attempt a re-enactment of the incident and to watch TV footage of what happened.
Eventually the officials ruled in his favour and Ross Fisher claimed the trophy and the £180,000 first prize.
A proud and relieved Ross Fisher said: "I went to move it (the bramble) thinking it was a loose impediment but it wasn't and I just left it.
"I feel very privileged that they said to me 'You haven't done anything wrong, you're the winner'. "
