Northern Ireland golfer Graeme McDowell leads in New Orleans
Northern Ireland golfer Graeme McDowell eagled the final hole to go into the lead by one shot after the first round of the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Graeme McDowell, 26, shot an eight-under 64 with Australian Stuart Appleby, who won last week's Houston Open, a shot back and a group of 10 players, including Retief Goosen, were joint-third on six under.
English golfer Ian Poulter hit a 67 while Phil Mickelson, playing his first tournament since winning his second Masters title, got a 68.
Justin Rose, also from England, is on three under while Ireland's Padraig Harrington finished his first round with a two-under 70.
Graeme McDowell's eagle came when he holed out from 118 yards with a gap wedge on his final hole, the ninth at the English Turn Golf and Country Club.
Graeme McDowell said: "It doesn't matter how good you hit - to get the ball in the cup takes a bit of luck.
"I've been waiting for this round for a while."
The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is the first major international sporting event hosted by New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina struck the area last August.
