Michelle Wie wants to be first woman-golfer at the Open

michellewieTeenage golf sensation Michelle Wie has said she hopes to become the first woman to play at the Open at Hoylake next week.

Michelle Wie, 16, could win a place at golf's oldest major if she is the highest non-exempt finisher at this week's John Deere Classic in Illinois.

"I'm not going to think about making the cut this year," Michelle Wie said.

"I really want to play well and maybe go to the Open. If I go to the Open, then I've made the cut."

For the first time ever, women are not prevented from playing in the Open, which takes place at Royal Liverpool starting on 20 July.

Michelle Wie missed out on Open qualifying this month because she decided to play in the Women's World Match Play Championship, where she got through to the quarter-finals.

Michelle Wie's appearance at the John Deere Classic will be the ninth time she has taken on the men in a professional event.
