Michelle Wie fails in bid for men's US Open
Teenage Hawaiian golf sensation Michelle Wie has failed in her bid to become the first woman to qualify for the US Open following a poor second round in the qualifying tournament in New Jersey.
A two-under-par 68 in round one left Michelle Wie joint-13th, with 18 places up for grabs, however, she missed out by five shots after a second-round 75.
Michelle Wie, 16, said: "I had a couple of bad putts when I didn't want them."
However, English golf star Ian Poulter won the qualifier at Columbus, Ohio, and made sure of his place at Winged Foot.
And American veteran golfer Jay Haas, 52, was among the 21 qualifiers and he will now be appearing in his 27th US Open.
Jay Haas, who had triumphed at the Senior PGA Championship two weeks ago, first played Winged Foot in the 1974 US Open as an amateur.
Ian Poulter's close friend Justin Rose and former Open champion John Daly was unsuccessful at taking the one remaining place on offer from a 15-man play-off and also among those who failed to qualify were South African Trevor Immelman, Swedish golfer Jesper Parnevik, Australians Geoff Ogilvy, Aaron Baddeley and Peter Lonard and 1986 USPGA champion Bob Tway.
A total of seventy-nine players were already exempted from the US Open before this week and a further 60 places had been decided on in 11 qualifiers on Monday.
