Michael Campbell feels Michelle Wie should concentrate on women's tour
US Open winning golfer Michael Campbell thinks Michelle Wie, 16, should prove herself on the women's tour and concentrate on that before taking on the men.
The teenage American golf sensation accepted an invitation this week to play in the Omega European Masters in Switzerland in September. Michelle Wie he has already played five times on the US Tour, as well as making the cut in a recent men's event in Korea.
But Michael Campbell said: "She has to prove she can win on the women's tour before she can have a chance on the men's."
Michelle Wie is set to become only the second woman to play on the European tour ever, after Laura Davies, and her inclusion in it has already increased interest in the event.
However, speaking before the Irish Open at Carton House, Michael Campbell was still not unconvinced and said:
"I can be politically correct and say it's wonderful to see Michelle Wie at a European Tour event.
"She is a wonderful talent, I've heard she hits it as long as the guys.
"But she needs to prove, to herself more so than anybody else, that she can win on the ladies' tour before she can actually come out and make a cut on the European or US Tour.
"It's great for the Tour but I think it takes away a sponsor's invite for a guy who is struggling to actually regain his card."
