Golfer David Toms optimistic about the Zurich Classic of New Orleans
Golfer David Toms hopes this week's Zurich Classic of New Orleans will show the world that things are getting back to normal in the hurricane disaster-struck American city.
World number eight David Toms, from Louisiana, who won the event in 2001, said: "Obviously this is a special event for me as it's in my home state and I'm a former champion.
"But more importantly, it will showcase New Orleans to a worldwide audience.
"I think it's very important that we showcase not only the golf tournament and the golfers, but the city itself."
David Toms added: "It will show that the tourism part of it is up and running and ready for more visitors."
The Classic, which begins at 1215 BST when England's Lee Westwood starts the event, is the first major international sports event hosted by New Orleans since Hurricane Katrina hit the area last August and flooded 80% of the "Big Easy".
Lee Westwood, the 1998 champion, said he felt "honoured" to be given the privilege of opening proceedings.
David Toms, the 2001 USPGA champion, has so far raised more than $1.5m for the Hurricane Katrina Relief Fund through his David Toms Foundation.
