Golfer Christie Kerr lands two Eagles
After starting badly, American Christie Kerr recovered with an
incredible set of figures to lead on nine-under-par 62 after the first
round of the Long Drugs Challenge at the Ridge Golf Club in Auburn,
California.
Two British players broke par - Cheshire's Joanne Morley was
tied for ninth on 68 and Scot Catriona Matthew finished on 70 - while
Christie Kerr was four ahead of the field.
Catriona Matthew, the top player from Britain this year, was set to
finish closer to the lead until she ran up a double-bogey six at the
18th. Catriona Matthew sliced her tee shot into a bush and was forced to take a
penalty drop.
Karen Stupples, who needed a good run to move into the top 30
on the money list and to qualify for the end of seasons ADT
Championship, also stumbled her way through the final holes.
Two under par, she took a triple-bogey seven at the 16th and a double-bogey five at the short 17th and wound up with a 74.
Christie Kerr dropped shots at the first two holes, but then
had a brilliant run of seven birdies and two eagles from the 13th (her
fourth hole) and the eagles came one after the other.
At the 480-yard 15th, she hit a six iron approach shot to four
feet and then at the 398-yard 16th she sank an eight iron shot from
139-yards.
"I have had two eagles in a round before but never back-to-back," said Christie Kerr. "It was pretty awesome."
It was equally remarkable that although the 27-year-old had
been struck by food poisoning on Tuesday and had pulled out of the eve
of the tournament pro-am, she still went ahead and achieved this
incredible success.
"I slept most of yesterday and I am still a little tired. But
the score certainly made me feel a lot better," Christie Kerr added.
