Golf star Ernie Els wants to knock Tiger Woods from top spot
Golf star Ernie Els has given himself a three-year period to replace Tiger Woods as world number one.
Ernie Els, 37, has been given new optimism and determination after recovering from a knee injury and then winning last week's South African Open.
"I see 2007 as the start of three years where I totally re-dedicate myself to the game," Ernie Els told his official website, adding: "I want to win more majors and start giving Tiger a run for his money."
Tiger Woods (20.41 ranking points) has a massive lead at the top of the official world rankings, with Jim Furyk (8.88), Phil Mickelson (7.17) and Adam Scott (7.03) also ahead of Ernie Els (6.05) in the list.
The ranking points in golf are gained over a two-year rolling period in a complicated system based on the strength of the fields competing at tournaments and a player's final position at the finish.
"If you look at where he is at the top of the rankings, it's a big lead so no one is going to get near him any time soon," said Ernie Els.
