Golf star Darren Clarke defends Ian Poulter as Nick Faldo's pick

darren clarkeGolf star Darren Clarke, who like Colin Montgomerie was not chosen as one of European captain Nick Faldo's Ryder Cup wildcards, has called for an end to the criticisms of Ian Poulter who did get one.

Former Europe captains Sam Torrance and Bernard Gallacher have both questioned Faldo's choice and Montgomerie also made some critical remarks about Ian Poulter being chosen.

Paul Casey was the other golfer picked by Faldo.

But even though he had been omitted like Montgomerie, Clarke was keen to defend Poulter and he explained: "He's a great player, he's 24th in the world. Both Paul Casey and Ian are ahead of me in the world rankings. That's the yardstick to which we're all measured, and that's the way it is."

Torrance had said he would have chosen Clarke and Casey as his wildcards if he had had any say in the matter.

And he added that Poulter would have been left out as punishment because he skipped a final chance of automatic qualification at Gleneagles last week.
