French golfer Christian Cevaer leads at China Open
French golfer Christian Cevaer gained a narrow one-shot lead after the first round of the China Open in Beijing and the 36-year-old player sunk six birdies to fend off a six-man pack including English golfers Ross Fisher, Simon Wakefield and Simon Dyson.
Spanish golfer Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano, Sweden's Peter Hanson and Jose-Filipe Lima from Portugal were alongside the three Englishmen and one shot off Christian Cevaer's lead.
Defending champion Paul Casey was five shots off the pace after two birdies on the back nine left him on one under and world number 13, Henrik Stenson from Sweden, had a very poor day on the Nick Faldo-designed course only carding a 73.
Rookie Fisher, who hopes to guarantee his card for the 2007 season, managed to hold the lead in the opening stages and was satisfied with his overall performance.
"There's a long way to go but I've put myself in a good place," said the 25-year-old golfer.
Simon Dyson was also pleased with his performance, which was given more of a boost by his maiden Tour win at the Indonesian Open last month.
"I've never felt this kind of confidence," Simon Dyson said.
