English golfer Lee Westwood must rely on wildcard to play Ryder Cup
English golfer Lee Westwood must rely on a wildcard to play in this year's Ryder Cup after he withdrew from the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational due to illness.
Lee Westwood, 33, had to have a top-six finish in the golfing contestt to have any chance of qualifying automatically for next month's match but he pulled out before the start of the final round after becoming ill with a fever.
However, Lee Westwood hopes to impress European captain Ian Woosnam at next week's BMW International Open in Munich and he has reasons to be optimistic about getting one of two wildcards on offer.
Along with Sergio Garcia, he was Europe's top scorer in the record-breaking win in Detroit two years ago and Lee Westwood has also won twice at the K Club near Dublin, where this year's Ryder Cup takes place.
Lee Westwood's form has also got a lot better since missing seven consecutive cuts earlier in the season.
Lee Westwood and Darren Clarke, whose wife Heather recently died, are thought to be the two wildcard favourites for the forthcoming event.
