English golf star Ian Poulter wins Madrid Open
English golf star Ian Poulter has won the Madrid Open by five strokes and claimed his first European Tour victory for nearly two years.
Ian Poulter shot a final round three-under-par 69 for a final total 22 under par to defeat Spanish golfer Ignacio Garrido, who scored a 66 on Sunday.
Welshman Phillip Price was one behind and a stroke ahead of Padraig Harrington, who was the best placed of three Ryder Cup players, with Spaniard Jose Maria Olazabal and Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke off the pace.
Jose Maria Olazabal finished nine shots behind Ian Poulter, and Darren Clarke and ended on seven under.
Darren Clarke, who had problems throughout the event due to his putting, said: "I played all right and I'm very pleased with how I'm hitting it. It'll be a different golf course next week, which will be nice."
Ian Poulter said: "I got my head down this week and I said I had a job to do and I played great, with just a couple of bogeys on those par-3s.
"But it's hard when you're four or five shots clear - it's difficult to concentrate."
