England golfer Graeme Storm improves his Open chances England's Graeme Storm has improved his chances for a place at the Open when he carded a four-under-par 68 on day one of qualifying at West Lancashire.
Graeme Storm's successful performance came just a day after he narrowly missed out on automatic qualification for Hoylake when he finished fourth in the European Open.
"I was disappointed on Sunday because I was one putt away, but I've been looking forward to this," Graeme Storm said.
There are three Open places available at each of the four two-day qualifiers.
Graeme Storm ended the day in a three-way tie for the lead with Essex amateur golfer Jack Hiluta and professional Andrew Clarke.
And Jim Payne, who won the silver medal awarded to the top amateur in 1991, could be back at the Open after taking a one-shot lead at Formby from France's Gregory Havret.
Jim Payne, 36, no longer plays on the golf circuit but is now a club professional at Southport and Ainsdale.
