Australian golfer Geoff Ogilvy wins WGC-Match Play Championship
Australian golfer Geoff Ogilvy, the 52nd seed, has beaten Davis Love
3&2 to win the WGC-Match Play Championship at La Costa in
California.
The 28-year-old golfer was leading by one up at the halfway stage of
the 36-hole final and extended his lead to three with birdies at the
22nd and 23rd.
Davis Love diminished the deficit to one after 28 holes but Geoff
Ogilvy strengthened his hold by winning the 29th, 30th and 32nd.
Davis Love sunk a 12ft birdie on the 33rd but gave over the match with
two to play to hand Geoff Ogilvy the $1.3m cheque for the winner.
"It's such a hard tournament to believe you're going to keep going, because it's not completely up to you," said Geoff Ogilvy.
"I got a bit lucky the first four days, and I made some really big putts.
"I don't think I missed a putt I needed to make this week, which is a first."
Davis Love, the 23rd seed, was hoping to do better after finishing in
second place in 2004 to Tiger Woods, who was out of the contest on
Friday.
But he admitted: "I didn't hit my irons that good. If he missed with his drive then I seemed to follow him.
"Somebody had to make some birdies, and he's the one who did it," Davis Love added.
American golfer Zach Johnson took third place in the $7.5m tournament.
