Annika Sorenstam for Women's World Cup in South Africa
World number one Annika Sorenstam will make her first appearance in
South Africa representing Sweden in January's Women's World Cup of Golf
at Sun City in the North West Province.
Tania Fourie, the Chief Executive of the Women's World Cup of Golf,
announced on Monday that Annika Sorenstam has confirmed her place in
the prestigious 20-nation event from January 20-22.
"This is an amazing coup for us," said Fourie. "To have the world's
best woman golfer competing in South Africa for the first time, and to
be making her debut in the first true Women's World Cup of Golf, is a
wonderful endorsement of the event.
"This is only the second Women's World Cup of Golf after our inaugural
event in February 2005. But it is fast becoming the premier team event
in the women's game, and having players of Annika's calibre in the
field only strengthens this perception."
The news of Annika Sorenstam's participation comes just after her
victory in the Samsung World Championship in California this past
weekend.
The countries, excluding South Africa and Sweden, that are
already confirmed for the event include Australia, Canada, Chile,
Columbia, England, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Korea, Mexico, New
Zealand, Philippines, Scotland, Spain, USA, Wales and defending
champions Japan. The event will be played at the Gary Player Country
Club and will feature all 20 countries competing over three rounds of
betterball, foursomes and strokeplay for a US$1.1-million purse.
Laurette Maritz and Ashleigh Simon will once again represent South Africa.
Tickets for the event are available nationwide from Computicket, or
visit the official website at www.womensworldcupofgolf.com for more
information.
