Annika Sorenstam declared world's leading woman golfer
Swedish golf star Annika Sorenstam has been officially named as the
world's top women's golfer following the publication of the first-ever
world rankings.
Annika Sorenstam, with 21 tour wins and three majors, which she gained
over the last two years, has a huge lead over Paula Creamer and
16-year-old Michelle Wie is in third place.
The leading British golfer is Catriona Matthew from Scotland in 19th position.
The rankings list will be published every week and will be used as the criteria needed for getting into certain tournaments.
In the same way as the men's world rankings, the list measures
performances over the last two years, with more emphasis being put on
the most recent 13 weeks.
Points are given according to the strength of field and are then divided by the number of tournaments.
But the women's rankings are different because amateurs as well as
professionals can be in the list, while the minimum number of
tournaments is 15 and the men's minimum is 40.
