American golfer Phil Mickelson shares lead at Pebble Beach
American professional golfer Phil Mickelson made an 18ft eagle putt on his final hole to claim a share of the lead at the AT&T National Pro-Am at Pebble Beach, California.
Born in San Diego and nicknamed "Lefty" for having a left-handed swing, Phil Mickelson joined compatriots Nick Watney and PGA Tour rookie John Mallinger at the top of the leaderboard for the first-round.
Phil Mickelson was happy to have played so well after he had failed to finish with a good result in his first three events this season, and he had missed the cut at last week's Phoenix Open.
"The greens were in great shape today and the key was that I started every putt on line at the right speed," said Phil Mickelson, commenting on the game and he added: "It was a fun day, even though it was windy at times, and I don't think I've ever driven the ball better before."
