American golfer Chris Couch wins PGA title at Zurich Classic
American golfer Chris Couch won his maiden PGA title at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.
Chris Couch, 32, had a seven-under 65 to finish at 19 under, one shot ahead of Charles Howell III and Fred Funk, who had a 62 and English golfer Ian Poulter finished in joint seventh on 14 under with Ireland's Padraig Harrington a shot further back.
First round leader Graeme McDowell of Northern Ireland finished on 12 under and so did Masters champion Phil Mickelson.
On Saturday, Chris Couch had leapt from joint-58th at the start of round three to be in the lead going into the final day and he maintained his focus to hold a two-stroke lead with two holes to play.
Chris Couch dropped a shot at the 17th and his approach to the 18th then landed at the back of a bunker beyond the green.
Chris Couch managed to get the ball out of the bunker but then it settled on an upslope in front the green.
But undaunted, Chris Couch then holed with a wedge shot to take the $1m (£593,000) first prize and to triple his PGA Tour career earnings with the win.
"It hasn't sunk in yet, but for a guy who has come from nothing to now have a million dollars is absolutely incredible," said Chris Couch.
