American golfer Ben Crane faces Par Three curse
American golfer Ben Crane has won the Par Three Contest on Augusta's nine-hole course on the day before the 2006 Masters starts.
Ben Crane managed to finish one shot ahead of Arron Oberholser, Shigeki Maruyama and Australian trio Mark Hensby, Robert Allenby and Adam Scott, however, his success may yet be tempered by the famous Par Three curse.
Since the pre-Masters event began in 1960, not one winner has ever gone on to win the main tournament on the same year.
Padraig Harrington, Par Three winner in 2003 and 2004, missed out on a third title but was one of three players to hit a hole-in-one at the ninth, along with Arron Oberholser and Tim Clark.
And although Tiger Woods wasn't at the tournament because of a "prior engagement", Jack Nicklaus who had announced his retirement from golf last year treated golf fans to a special surprise appearance.
Jack Nicklaus said he had no intention of even bringing his clubs, but he had been persuaded to play by his grandson Charlie, who was his caddy for the event.
