Welsh cyclist Nicole Cooke wins in Italy
Welsh cyclist and world number one Nicole Cooke has made a great start to her campaign in Europe this season with a win in the 102km Costa Etrusca race in Italy.
Although the weather was cold and wintry, Nicole Cooke, 23, went ahead with 1.5km left to ride to a clear winning finish, 10 seconds clear of Italian cyclist Fabiana Luperini and Swiss rider Nicole Brandli.
Nicole Cooke, the World Cup champion, had already won the first World Cup race in Australia and so she has continued with her winning performance and skill.
Nicole Cooke will now defend her title in the next round in Belgium on 8 April.
Speaking of her team and the conditions of the race, Nicole Cooke said:
"They worked really well and it is gratifying that I was able to reward their efforts with the win.
"With the weather so bad at one stage I was thinking that to get to the end of the race in one piece would be a success!"
