Welsh cyclist Nicole Cooke wins Geelong race in Australia
Welsh woman cyclist Nicole Cooke has defended her World Cup title well with a win in the first race at Geelong in Australia.
World number one Nicole Cooke, 23, kept clear of the other riders and went ahead of Australian cyclists Oenone Wood and Nikki Egyed after 120km on the road.
Nicole Cooke was already the first non-Australian to win the Geelong Tour earlier in the week and she said proudly: "The way it all panned out, it's one of the most fantastic wins of my career, a classic road race victory,
"It was a mixture of tactics and power that saw me through.
"I've won the World Cup series twice before but have always started slowly and made up the points in mid-season.
"To get the early win, psychological advantage, and the series leaders' jersey is just fantastic."
It was the second time Nicole Cooke had visited Australia for racing after she gave a very impressive performance at last year's Melbourne Commonwealth Games and came third in the road race.
