UK cyclist Rob Hayles banned for suspected doping
British cyclist Rob Hayles, who is an Olympic medallist and ex-world champion, has been banned from taking part in the sport for two weeks after he failed a blood test at the Track Cycling World Championships.
Rob Hayles, 35, had been all set to race for the UK in the Manchester event but his blood result was 0.3% over the permitted 50% haematocrit level.
Although this was not definite proof that illegal blood-boosting may have taken place because British Cycling says a result like this can also occur naturally Rob Hayles was nevertheless suspended.
A disappointed Rob Hayles said: "I am disappointed and frustrated to have to wait for further tests over the next two weeks before I can compete again. I accept the process is in place for good reason and I agree with it."
But Rob Hayles said he was still hopeful and added: "I also accept that I must follow protocol. These anomalies have happened to others across the world, and after two weeks they have been resolved. So I just have to wait for two weeks."
