Tour de France runner-up Oscar Pereiro must clear his name
Tour de France 2006 runner-up and Spanish racing-cyclist Oscar Pereiro still needs to explain why he tested positive for salbutamol in the 2006 race, following a report, January 18 2007, in French newspaper Le Monde.
Oscar Pereiro Sio, born in Mos, Galicia is a Spanish professional rider currently best known for finishing second in theTour de France - he took a second place in the race in 2005 too when he was runner up to George Hincapie.
It appears that Oscar Pereiro tested positive twice, but he claims that the authorities had granted him a waiver to take an asthma medication containing salbutamol.
Oscar Pereiro has until 25 January to provide the necessary proof of this, after which he will face disciplinary action. "He must explain himself, prove his innocence," said French anti-doping president Pierre Bordry.
"Since September 2006, we have asked him by letter to hand over these documents.
"Each time, there has been no response. It seems Pereiro has lost track of the doctor who filled out his forms," Pierre Bordry explained.
"I used Ventolin (an asthma medicine which contains salbutamol) because the International Cycling Union allowed me to do so, " said Oscar Pereiro.
