Tour de France bosses cross Bjarne Riis off winners' list
The organisers of the Tour de France have removed Bjarne Riis from their list of winners after he admitted using performance-enhancing drugs. Bjarne Riis had won in the 1996 race but now loses his title.
Tour de France spokesman Philippe Sudres explained: "We have removed him from the list because of the doping admission. We consider philosophically that he can no longer claim to have won."
Bjarne Riis's team-mate Jan Ullrich had finished in second place in the 1996 Tour but it hasn't been revealed as to whether he will now become winner.
The Union Cycliste Internationale had said last month that the time limit for sanctioning Bjarne Riis has expired but called upon him "to return his yellow jersey, the symbol of his victory".
Bjarne Riis was reported to have responded: "My jersey's at home in a cardboard box. They are welcome to come and get it."
Bjarne Riis, 43, now the sporting director of Team CSC, admitted that he used the blood-booster EPO between 1993 and 1998, and during his '96 Tour de France win.
