Spanish cyclist Roberto Heras appeals against dope ban
Spanish rider Roberto Heras is launching an appeal against a two-year
ban imposed for using the prohibited substance EPO and his lawyer said
he was making a decision as to whether to have the case heard in his
own country or at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
"We need to study the decision carefully to see where we take the
appeal," Jose Maria Buxeda explained to the Spanish daily paper El Pais
on Thursday. Roberto Heras has a month to lodge his complaint.
Roberto Heras, 32, who comes from Salamanca, tested positive for EPO
while looking set to score a record fourth triumph in the three-week
Tour of Spain.
EPO stimulates red blood cell production, increases their oxygen-carrying capacity and therefore improves stamina.
The Spanish Cycling Federation stripped the cyclist of his victory and made Russian rider Denis Manchu as the winner.
Roberto Heras was also suspended by his Liberty Saguaros team when the
positive test result was released in November, and will also be stopped
from being a contestant for one of the elite Proctor teams for the next
four years.
Roberto Heras has claimed that he was innocent of the charge for which
he was punished and argued there must have been a mix-up at the
laboratory and that the testing process for EPO was in error.
