Spanish cyclist Juan Manuel Garate upstages the big names at Giro d'Italia
Spanish cyclist Juan Manuel Garate had a surprise win in the Giro d'Italia on Friday by winning stage 19 and upstaged some better-known names.
Juan Manuel Garate had ridden up the mountain pedal for pedal with Jens Voigt but then he pulled clear in the final metres to win.
Jens Voigt's teammate Ivan Basso managed to hang on to his overall lead after another impressive climb alongside Gilberto Simoni, one of his opponents in the race.
Jan Ullrich was troubled by a back complaint and withdrew from the race during the stage but his sporting director Rudy Pevenage insisted the injury would not prevent him getting ready for the Tour de France.
Jens Voigt, Ivan Basso's teammate, who decided the Spanish rider deserved the win after working harder on the climbs, gave Juan Manuel Garate the victory.
After tapping Juan Manuel Garate on the back and telling him to go for the win, Jens Voigt said: "I didn't deserve the victory today, He worked for it."
And race leader Ivan Basso admitted his mind had been elsewhere because his second child, Santiago, had been born before the stage.
