Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador to join Astana
Spanish cyclist and Tour de France winner Alberto Contador looks likely to join the Astana team for next year following the end of the Discovery Channel team for whom he was a rider.
Discovery Channel's Johan Bruyneel is going to be managing Astana, which pulled out from the Tour de France amid a blaze of bad publicity over the doping scandals in the sport.
Alberto Contador said: "I've spoken with Johan Bruyneel and lacking only a few details, I'll go with him to Astana."
"It is clear that the new Astana has nothing to do with the old team."
Alberto Contador was probably making reference to former team leader Alexandre Vinokourov who was dropped by Astana after he tested positive for blood doping, and two other riders from the same team, Andrej Kashechkin and Matthias Kessler, also tested positive.
Alberto Contador added: "I've received various offers from important teams. I didn't receive any offers from Spain. I would have liked it but I can only hope for next time."
