Spanish cyclist Alberto Contador's team banned from Tour
Spanish racing cyclist Alberto Contador looks unlikely to be able to defend his title now that his Astana team have been banned from this year's Tour de France, which he is the current reigning champion of.
Alberto Contador joined Astana on a two-year contract at the end of 2007 when the Discovery Channel team packed up, however, it seems to have been a bad move because Astana's record of doping offences has resulted in the team being barred from this year's event.
Alberto Contador complained: "My aim this year was to win it again, but they've deprived me of that opportunity. Astana should be in the Tour."
Astana had taken over from Liberty Seguros, a team that was omitted from the 2006 Tour de France after several of their cyclists were banned from being in the race due to their alleged involvement in the doping scandal known as Operation Puerto.
