Spanish Cycling Federation drops proceedings in Operation Puerto
The Spanish Cycling Federation has decided to drop the disciplinary proceedings against riders involved in Spanish doping investigation 'Operation Puerto' but a disciplinary probe against team officials and employees implicated in the scandal continues.
The decision arrived after the judge overseeing the case said evidence from the investigation could not be used as the basis for punishing the riders who were implicated and earlier on Friday, charges against Italy's Ivan Basso were dropped.
The Italian cycling federation dropped allegations against Giro d'Italia champion Ivan Basso after the Italian Olympic Committee's recommended that the case be done away with.
Ivan Basso was banned from this year's Tour de France after he became implicated in Operation Puerto.
Operation Puerto had been started following raids on addresses in Madrid and Zaragoza in May, which found large quantities of anabolic steroids, laboratory equipment used for blood transfusions and more than 100 bags of frozen blood.
