Racing cyclist Danilo Di Luca wins Giro d'Italia
Danilo Di Luca beat racing cyclist Enrico Gasparotto after he got into trouble in a 30-man crash on stage four of the Giro d'Italia.
Danilo Di Luca, 31, won in a time of four hours 22:42 seconds, defeating Riccardo Ricco and the hotly tipped Damiano Cunego in a sprint finish.
Danilo Di Luca, who rides for Liquigas, has won five Giro stages in his career and he now leads Italian team-mate Franco Pellizotti by 26 seconds.
The crash split the peloton in two and Cunego and world champion Paolo Bettini were also involved in it. Cunego was forced to change his bike in order to carry on with the race.
But Ian McLeod of the Francaise des Jeux team was not so lucky and after suffering a broken collarbone he was forced to retire from the event.
Danilo Di Luca wanted to thank the rest of his team for helping him achieve his win on the 153km leg, which had ended with a 17km climb that included 21 hairpin turns.
"I only worked for the last 200 metres, they worked hard for the entire climb," Danilo Di Luca said.
