Rabobank must pay compensation to Michael Rasmussen
Rabobank has been ordered to pay Michael Rasmussen more than half a million pounds compensation because of how it sacked him from its 2007 Tour de France team.
The 34-year-old Danish cyclist was removed from the race by his Dutch team on 25 July because he had lied about his whereabouts when he was wanted for doping tests. But now a Utrecht judge ruled that whilst Rabobank was entitled to dismiss him, it had followed the wrong procedure for doing so.
On Tuesday, Monaco Cycling Federation banned Micheal Rasmussen for two years and they can do this because they are responsible for his racing licence.
After Rabobank threw him out of the Tour de France, Rasmussen took legal action for unlawful dismissal against his former team sponsor, and called for damages of £4.4m.
Rabobank had decided on immediate dismissal but this procedure that can only be used on urgent grounds, and the judge considered that Rabobank must have known about the lies for several weeks before they chose to sack Rasmussen.
