Lithuanian cyclist Raimondas Rumsas sentenced for doping
Lithuanian cyclist Raimondas Rumsas and his wife Edita have been given
four-month suspended prison sentences for importing prohibited drugs.
Raimondas Rumsas, who finished third in the 2002 Tour de France, and
his wife were charged with possessing and importing illegal substances.
Edita Rumsas had been caught with growth hormones and EPO in her car in 2002.
And Polish doctor Kristof Ficek, who prescribed the prohibited substances, was handed a 12-month suspended sentence.
The court ordered all three people to pay £690 to the French Cycling Federation.
Edita Rumsas was arrested by French customs officials after the drugs
were found in her car as she headed home to Italy on the last day of
the 2002 Tour.
Edita Rumsas said the substances were for her ill mother and was detained for 75 days before being released on bail.
However, while his wife faced repeated interrogation by police and customs officers, Raimondas Rumsas returned to Lithuania.
Raimondas Rumsas has proclaimed his innocence throughout the case but
was suspended by his Lampre team in May 2003 after failing a test for
EPO during the Tour of Italy.
