Lance Armstrong's former team Discovery to disband
Cyclist Lance Armstrong's former team Discovery is to disband at the end of the season, it has been reported, and failure to find a new sponsor has been cited as the reason.
Lance Armstrong won a record seven Tours de France with Discovery, and Alberto Contador, who won this year's controversial race, will be one of 27 riders wondering where his future lies after the team is no more.
Discovery manager Johan Bruyneel explained: "I had contacts with candidate sponsors but the situation in the sport is so bad that nobody wants to be involved with us."
Tailwind Sports, which operated Discovery, has been struggling in a search for new sponsors after a summer in which cycling has again been hit badly by doping scandals.
However, Lance Armstrong, who is a part-owner of Tailwind Sports, doesn't accept that Discovery is finished for good and said: "I do not think you have seen the last of this organisation in the sport."
