Italian cyclist Riccardo Ricco admits he was lucky
Italian cyclist Riccardo Ricco has said he was lucky not to have been discovered to have used drugs far earlier than he actually was when he tested positive and was thrown out of the recent Tour de France.
24-year-old Ricco was removed from the race after it was found he had used the banned blood booster EPO, although he says the doping officials missed catching him in many earlier tests.
He explained that they only found a positive result in two out of 13 tests when he had the banned substance in him all the time.
Ricco says that clearly their methods don't work properly all the time so need to be looked into.
Ricco could face a two-year suspension from cycling and he is the subject of a French criminal investigation as well.
Ricco could be charged with possession as well as the use of drugs and could get a maximum two years in jail and a £2,950 fine if he is found guilty.
