Italian cyclist Paulo Bettini wins World Championships
Italian cyclist Paulo Bettini hung on to his World Championships road race title when he won a sprint in Stuttgart.
Paulo Bettini pushed ahead of Russian rider Alexandr Kolobnev and Stefan Schumacher of Germany at the line to finish the race in 6 hours 44 mins 43 secs.
On Friday, a German court had ruled that Paulo Bettini could take part in the event although he wouldn't sign an anti-doping pledge.
Paulo Bettini said: "It was not an easy win and I say thanks to all of Italy," and he added: "It was a tough week for me. They accused me of everything and I responded with victory."
Paulo Bettini has not had anything to do with drugs but has not signed the anti-doping pledge because he disagrees with a clause forcing any cyclist given a doping ban of two years to pay a whole year's salary, in addition to the standard fine.
