Italian cyclist Ivan Basso wins Giro d'Italia's 16th stage
Italian cyclist Ivan Basso overcame all his opponents to win the 16th stage of the Giro d'Italia and move further within sight of gaining an overall victory.
Ivan Basso took his third stage of the race and beat Gilberto Simoni by 86 seconds with Leonardo Piepoli in third.
Ivan Basso went ahead of most of his rivals on the final stretch, and dropped Gilberto Simoni 6.5km out to finish well in front.
Ivan Basso now leads Jose Enrique Gutierrez by five minutes and 24 seconds in the overall standings with five days to go.
Not one of Ivan Basso's cyclist opponents could rival the power he showed on the steep Dolomite Mountains as he went easily ahead during the final climb on the Monte Bondone.
"This is one of my best wins of my career," said Ivan Basso proudly, and he is now hoping to become the 13th rider in history to win the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in the same season.
